The town in the heart of Spiš – Spiššké Vlachy, formerly called Olazi, Wahi, Villa, Latina – with a rich history and interesting sights within its closeness, is located in the southeastern part of the Hornád Basin some 380 meters above sea level.It has a rich history and is surrounded by many places of interest.

The Urgian ruler Belo IV. granted the town considerable rights and privileges in 1243.

The town experienced its golden age between the 16th and 18th century.

In 1863, the first volunteer fire-fighting force in Slovakia was established here.

The town`s main historical monuments are:
The Church of St. John the Baptist, a Marian Baroque pillar from 1727, an Evangelic Roman church from 1787, and a Gothic building of a former Town Hall from the 18th century.

A number of historically significant people were born in the area, e.g. the bishop František Tondra.

The area is surrounded by beautiful countryside and a recreational complex Zahura with three natural ponds.
